The Civic, generation by generation
Fifty-plus years of the car that launched a thousand builds. Years shown are US model years.
| Gen | Years | Why it rules |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 1973–1979 | Honda's compact, fuel-sipping debut. Its CVCC engine met tough mid-70s US emissions rules without a catalytic converter. |
| 2nd | 1980–1983 | Bigger, roomier and more refined, helping the Civic become a mainstream favorite. |
| 3rd | 1984–1987 | Brought the lightweight CRX and the first Si models. |
| 4th · EF | 1988–1991 | Double-wishbone suspension front and rear gave it handling that tuners still love. |
| 5th · EG | 1992–1995 | VTEC arrived in US Civics, and the EG hatchback became an icon of the '90s import scene. |
| 6th · EK | 1996–2000 | Home of the first-ever Civic Type R, the EK9, sold in Japan from 1997. |
| 7th | 2001–2005 | Introduced the first Civic Hybrid, while the EP3 hatchback carried the Si badge. |
| 8th | 2006–2011 | A futuristic two-level dashboard, and a high-revving K20 engine in the Si. |
| 9th | 2012–2015 | The Si stepped up to a larger 2.4-liter engine with more torque. |
| 10th | 2016–2021 | Turbocharged engines arrived, and the FK8 became the first Type R officially sold in the US. |
| 11th | 2022 onward | A cleaner, more grown-up design, plus the FL5 Type R and a new Si. |
